Course Description

The Foundation Madrasa is an after-school facility where children attend 5 hours per week of core teaching for 42 weeks in an academic year. Students are taught in a class of a maximum of 15 students progressing through Key Stages of the curriculum. The school curriculum has been carefully and skilfully crafted with the aim of providing young Muslims with a solid religious foundation for progressing in the modern world.
Most children join the Madrasa at the age of 5 or 6, (Year 1), although students can join at any age. Enrolment for each year takes place in September each year. Students are placed into classes based on their school year group progressing through a Qur’an reading and memorisation of du’as. Students also follow an Islamic studies curriculum from Year 3 through to Year 11, when they sit a GCSE examination in Islamic Studies. The Madrasa currently has 165 boys and girls on roll.
Abu Zahra Foundation aims to create a friendly atmosphere between teachers and pupils; yet still maintaining a high level of discipline so that accessing Islamic Knowledge is easy and enjoyable for everyone. In order to achieve this and ensure the smooth running of the Madrasa, we have set out some rules for the children as well as guidelines for the parents.
The importance of education cannot be neglected in this age. This Madrasa is one means of providing an intellectual service to the community. However, the Madrasa is only conceived as being part of an integral whole; whereby individuals, parents and families – together with the activities of the Madrasa – strive to create people, homes, and finally, a community, that is illuminated by the Prophetic example.
Parents are provided feedback on the progress of students periodically as well as a mid-year Parent’s Evening and an end of year written report.
Course Outline
-
Qur’an with Tajwid
Children learn how to recite the Qur’an with correct pronunciation. The emphasis is on correct pronunciation at an early age; as opposed to rushing to complete the whole Qur’an whilst committing gross errors therein.
We currently use the six-volume book published by the Ministry of Education, Malaysia. We have found this to be far superior to anything available on the market. It is a graded method, and students will progress onto reading the Uthmani script which is the most widely used in the Muslim world. Each year, students will read a set amount and completing a khatm of the Qur’an in Year 9, with emphasis on collective reading and applying correct makharij and other essential rules of Tajwid.
All our teachers are certified to teach the Qur’an having either being trained in the Muslim world under qualified teachers or having completed our in-house courses in tajwid and a complete reading of the Qur’an.
Islamic Studies
This involves a firm grounding in Beliefs (‘Aqida) and what Allah has made lawful (halal) and unlawful (haram), prayer, fasting and other Islamic rituals (Fiqh), as well as an introduction to other subjects such as Hadith, Sira, History, and Islamic Art & Music. From Year 3 to Year 6, the children complete the Safar Islamic Studies Series to build their essential Islamic Knowledge complete with workbooks and regular assessment.
In Year 7 to 9, students study the iSyllabus for Schools curriculum which is a comprehensive study of Islam and its related sciences. Each lesson is delivered using presentations on the SMART boards and accompanying worksheets are completed to consolidate learning. Assessment is carried out every 6 weeks with an end of unit test, as well as an end of year exam.
This provides a sound basis for religious practice and understanding as well as preparing the students to take on the GCSE Islamic Studies in year 10 and 11.
Memorisation
Students memorise all the supplications of the salah, daily du’as, and short surahs of the Qur’an. These are all carefully selected in Abu Zahra Press’ Muslim Prayer Book.
